3D animation software developer Interactive Data Visualization (IDV), has announced that its SpeedTreeRT foliage middleware will be utilized in Epic's forthcoming Unreal Tournament 3, including, for the first time, "unprecedented tree-editing features" for the game's mod community. IDV's SpeedTreeRT delivers trees and plants with adjustable wind effects, user-configurable LOD transitions, and includes a library of hundreds of tree, plant and marine models representing more than 170 core species. SpeedTreeRT also includes SpeedTreeCAD, a Windows application used to create and edit animated trees in real-time. News of the integration should come as little surprise, as SpeedTreeRT was one of Unreal Engine 3's first integrated partners, added to the system in March of 2005, but the addition of support for the game's mod editor will be new with this release. Said Epic VP Mark Rein, "For the first time in any game featuring SpeedTree, Unreal Tournament 3 is going to let players use the professional tree-editing features of the SpeedTree system to create and edit foliage in the worlds they develop. Content creators will enjoy an unprecedented degree of freedom and as they build fantastic new worlds.”
