Nearly five years after its first release, 2D platformer New Super Mario Bros. has become the first Nintendo DS game to sell over six million copies in Japan. According to data from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain (as translated by Andriasang), the game has sold precisely 6,015,255 units through December 26, making it the biggest game on the system. Nearly 900,000 of those sales came on the game's very first week of availability, back in May 2006, according to competing sales tracker Media Create. Since then, the game has become one of the industry's rare perennial sellers, bouncing up and down the country's weekly top sellers charts for nearly five years. Through September 2010, Nintendo reports the game had sold more than 24 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling game on the system and one of the top-selling games of all time. The news comes one month after New Super Mario Bros. Wii became the first Wii title to sell four million copies in Japan. That title has sold over 16 million copies worldwide through September, according to Nintendo.
