Harry Potter Conjures Third Week At Top Of UK Charts

EA’s latest summer movie tie-in has gained a third week at number one, in a sales chart that is becoming ever more dominated by Nintendo titles – including an extraordinary performance by Mario Party 8 after less than one full day on sale.

With the movie now released in UK cinemas, Electronic Arts’ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has been able to easily maintain its position at the top of the sales charts, despite an 11 percent drop in sales. With few other major new releases More Brain Training and Shrek The Third have also been able to hold onto their second and third place spots, respectively. Nintendo’s DS exclusive saw sales drop 17 percent, while Activision’s multiformat movie tie-in dropped by 28 percent. The most notable aspect of this week’s charts though is the continually strong performance of Nintendo titles, with four first party games in the top ten and five exclusives overall (including 505 Game’s Cooking Mama at number nine. Including multiformat releases there are now more than ten Wii games in the top forty and more than twenty Nintendo DS titles. The most remarkable performance though has been from Mario Party 8, which despite being recalled on Friday afternoon, and thus enjoying less than a full day’s worth of sales, still managed to debut at number five. Appropriately, the only other new entry of the week is also for a Nintendo console, with Midway’s casual gamer friendly TouchMaster for the Nintendo DS entering the charts at number twenty-nine.
