Flashpoint Developer Reveals Carrier Command Sequel

Seminal 1988 title Carrier Command is getting a sequel, with original Operation: Flashpoint and ArmA: Armed Assault developer Bohemia Interactive Studio revealing plans for a follow-up on PC and “other popular platforms” for 2010.

Seminal 1988 title Carrier Command is to receive a sequel, with original Operation: Flashpoint and ArmA: Armed Assault developer Bohemia Interactive Studio revealing plans for a follow-up on PC and “other popular platforms” for 2010. The original game was developed by long since defunct British developer Realtime Games Software for a variety of 8-bit and 16-bit computers. The seminal title mixed 3D simulation, action and strategy elements as players controlled a futuristic aircraft carrier attempting to liberate an archipelago. The new game will be known as Carrier Command: Gaea Mission, the subtitle referring to a tie-in with an ongoing series of science fiction novels by author Didi Gilson. The original game had no such association. Bohemia Interactive will work on the title with Black Element Software, with both Czech developers having previously co-operated on expansion pack ArmA: Queen’s Gambit. More information on Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is excepted to be revealed at the Leipzig Game Convention starting August 20th. "When we first heard about the opportunity to develop a game based on the original Carrier Command, we were instantly hooked," says Bohemia Interactive CEO Marek Spanel. "For us, Carrier Command was not only one of the most innovative games we had ever played but it is also one of the very few games that truly influenced our gaming tastes and motivated us in our own home grown game development, which later materialized in the form of Operation: Flashpoint, with similar open ended gameplay and emphasis on a deeply simulated game world." "Having the opportunity to create an actual Carrier Command game is not only a great honor for us, but it also allows us to take the legendary title we all love and do it justice with a truly next-gen rendition," adds Otakar Nieder, the game’s project leader at Black Element Software.
