The release of the standard version of the PSP Slim and Lite (only the limited edition Final Fantasy VII version was released last week) has given PSP games the number one and two spots in the weekly Japanese sales charts, although once again combined sales of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 have outperformed all others. Combined sales of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 totaled 160,000, easily eclipsing Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII in first place with 109,000. However, the Pokemon series’ common practice of splitting the game into two slightly different SKUs – with changes in each to encourage trading – has again denied it the official top spot. In second place, Konami saw considerable success with Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus, with 93,000 units sold. The game is an expansion of the original with new characters, missions and play modes – most focused on online play. Other new titles failed to enjoy quite such an impressive debut, with Takara Tomy’s 2D fighting game Katekyoo Hitman Reborn!! selling 31,000 units on Nintendo DS at number five. There was also a disappointing debut for Mario Strikers Charged on Wii at number six, with just 28,000 units sold. The biggest surprise of the week though is what will be known as Samurai Warriors: Katana at number nine. Despite being a spin-off from Koei’s long running and popular series the long delayed Wii exclusive title sold only 17,000 units in its first week.
