How do you test your mettle as a bona fide game designer?

"I think game designers, if they're serious, should have to come up with at least one Pong variant and at least one chess variant," said QWOP designer Bennett Foddy during the GDC 2014 Experimental Gameplay Workshop. "The problem is, I kind of hate chess."

Foddy then proceeded to demonstrate his unusual approach to game design by reimagining chess as a 16-player competitive multiplayer video game, replete with real-time combat and plenty of beautiful chaos.

It was a fun presentation, and now you can see how Foddy's spin on this timeless game came together over on the GDC Vault's YouTube channel. It's free!
