NetHack gets first major update in over a decade

The seminal freeware Rogue-like NetHack gets its first major update in over a decade.

The NetHack team have announced the release of seminal freeware Rogue-like NetHack 3.6, the game's first major update in over a decade.

3.6 will be a "combination of the old and the new" for the ASCII-based game, and unlike previous updates, which simply focused on general fixes and tweaks, will implement a number of more meaningful changes.

"This release consists of a series of foundational changes in the team, underlying infrastructure and changes to the approach to game development," explained the NetHack team.

"Those of you expecting a huge raft of new features will probably be disappointed. Although we have included a number of new features, the focus of this release was to get the foundation established so that we can build on it going forward."

The update to the title, whose procedural gameplay helped birth a number of more recent games like Dwarf Fortress,  will also include a tribute to late author Terry Pratchett, who was fan of the game and whose Discworld novels inspired the creation of NetHack's own Tourist class.

You can find a complete list of all the changes coming in 3.6 right here.
