Do's and Don't of Mobile Game Development

Mobile Game Development

Smartphones have opened a new door of opportunity for game developers. Earlier, famous game development companies like EA and Ubisoft used to build games for computers and gaming consoles but since the launch of phones like iPhone and Galaxy S, developers realized that they could make millions by creating mobile games as well. These days, phones come with high-end processor and plenty of RAM. Hence, they can handle powerful, graphics-rich games as well.

There is no doubt that  mobile app game development is a lucrative business and if people love your offering, they wont bother to spend a hefty amount of money to enjoy it. However, operating systems like iOS and Android offer hundreds of games to users and rising above the competitors is a tough challenge.

Both iOS and Android provides some rules and regulations to game developers and they must follow them accordingly to secure a place in the app market. If you have just started a mobile game development company, you must be aware of the things you should do and shouldn’t to achieve success in this business.

Do- Mobile phones are equipped with powerful hardware now but obviously not as powerful as desktop computers or gaming consoles. Besides, operating systems like Android can run on a low end device as well. Hence, you must build a game that can run with moderate hardware support as well.

Don’t- Never copy any popular game developed by someone else. If you like an idea, base your game on the same idea but take it to the next level so that nobody calls you a copycat.

Do- Keep in mind the screen resolution of mobile phones. There are several phones in the market with different screen sizes and not every model features a retina or HD display. Hence, make sure that the elements in your game render well in low resolution handsets as well to give players an optimum experience.

Don’t- Forget to invest money in promotion. Marketing and promotion is very important to attract potential buyers. There are dozens of free games available in any app market and unless you promote your product heavily, only a few people may open their wallet to buy your premium game.

Do- Decide your target audience first and know their expectations. Your game must fulfill the expectations of the target audience. For example, if you are targeting 10-15 yr old customers, they will prefer a simplistic game with animated characters while the 20-35 yrs group of serious gamers prefers high end graphics and loud audio.

Don’t- Never overlook the UI elements, because user interface makes a game easy or difficult for its users. Also, never neglect the character design part. If the characters are not engaging, people won’t be interested in the gameplay.
