The cold, dark embrace of winter rising up around us brings with it everyone's end-of-year honors, and Apple is no exception, naming Square Enix Montreal's Lara Croft Go its top game of 2015.

The award was decided by Apple's editorial team, and it's worth noting that it doesn't seem to coincide with market performance -- the game is nowhere to be seen in Apple's list of top paid apps for the year, which is dominated by games like Heads Up! and Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

Apple's crew also named Bethesda's Fallout Shelter and 1Button's one-button platformer Mr. Jump  as runner-ups for this year's award, and gave a nod to Rac7 Games' aural horror game Dark Echo as the "Most Innovative" App Store game of 2015.

For more on how Lara Croft Go was designed and how its developers tried to emulate how they remembered feeling when they played the original Tomb Raider, check out Gamasutra's interview with technical director Antoine Routon from earlier this year.
