Sony and Rockstar Games have released a joint statement noting that neither the latest PlayStation firmware nor Rockstar's game LA Noire are causing PS3 hardware to overheat, although an actual reason has not yet been given. Earlier in the week, some players found that their consoles were overheating while playing the new detective game. Rockstar issued a statement on its site explaining that it was an issue with PlayStation firmware 3.61, but this was retracted soon afterwards, with Rockstar noting that it was not an official statement, and had been posted by the customer support team. Nick Caplin, Head of Communications at SCEE, has now said, "We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3s overheating or shutting down while playing LA Noire." "At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither LA Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise." Caplin later noted, "We have not seen an increase in the number of calls we get on a normal day. There is not an issue here, especially not linking over heating to LA Noire or firmware 3.61." "With so many PS3s in the market, the odd one is bound to over heat and for some reason this has been made to sound like an particular issue. We have not seen an increase from the normal level of calls that are received by our call centres on a daily basis." Caplin also responded to a user comment on the PlayStation blog, noting that the overheating issue was being found "on other consoles" as well (the game is also on Xbox 360), although this comment was later removed.
