Newsbrief: Mobile startup Red Robot Labs announced today that it plans to expand into Asia via a partnership with Taiwanese company Next Media Animation. Next Media, perhaps best known online for its odd animated news parodies, will gain access to Red Robot's R2 gaming platform, which it will use to make location-based games for mobile platforms. The company will also help launch and distribute Red Robot's game Life is Crime in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. In addition, Next Media has invested $5 million in Red Robot to help the company further develop its location-based technologies. "Next Media Animation is known for creating addictive content. We have been looking to expand into location-based gaming, but we were waiting for the right technology... We can’t wait to let our creatives loose on their cutting-edge technology to see what we can do," said Next Media chairman Jimmy Lai.
