MachineGames gives Quake a new episode for its 20th birthday

To celebrate Quake's 20th, Wolfenstein: The New Order studio MachineGames (which, like id Software, is now owned by ZeniMax Media) released a new Quake episode this week.

Wolfenstein 3D and Doom developer id Software released another seminal first-person shooter, Quake, twenty years ago this week.

To celebrate, Wolfenstein: The New Order studio MachineGames released a new Quake episode this week that can be downloaded directly from Bethesda Softworks' website.

It's a nice way of paying tribute to a game that's influenced and inspired countless game developers, a bit of fresh content that deftly complements the archive of early Quake development materials that id cofounder John Romero published earlier this week.

Of course, there's a marketing angle to this as well: Machine Games and id Software are now both owned by Bethesda Softworks parent company ZeniMax Media. At E3 earlier this month, Bethesda and id announced plans to develop a new multiplayer-focused Quake game, Quake Champions.

For more insight into the impact Quake (and specifically, Quake multiplayer) had on the game industry, look back at this 1997 Game Developer Magazine feature from id alum Ned Purdom on how Quake came to one of the world's first online game services.
