One of Sony's leading virtual reality developers, Dr. Dave Ranyard, has announced he'll be leaving the company to pursue an independent career in the VR industry.

Before his departure Ranyard was the studio head at Sony's London Studio - the team responsible for flagship PlayStation VR experiences such as The Deep and The London Heist

Ranyard said leaving was a "tough decision," adding that he might work on Sony's PlayStation VR platform in the future, albeit as an indie.

"2016 is going to be the year of VR, so it’s the perfect time for me to take this step into independent development," added Ranyard.

"The emergence of a new medium like VR doesn’t come along very often and I really want to be a part of this new world.”
