Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games' latest title, a 2D side-scroller called Song of the Deep, will be published by GameStop.
The U.S. video game retailer will offer distribution and publishing support, and will be the only outlet to stock the physical edition when the game releases in Q2 this year.
Although GameStop is committed to making Song of the Deep a success, it isn't about to become a fully fledged publisher just yet.
According to Mark Stanley, GameStop's senior vice president of marketing and sales, it's merely testing the waters at this point.
"Part of my role at GameStop is to really look at new opportunities, and as Ted and I kept talking we said 'what if we can leverage this great platform that GameStop can bring and this reach and bring this passion project to fruition with a lot of support?'" said Stanley, speaking to Gamesindustry.biz.
"I think this is a first opportunity to do this and right now we're fully focused on Song of the Deep and looking at how this works and what the results are and then we'll sit back and see what we did right and did wrong and look at potential future opportunities."
Song of the Deep will also be available digitally on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC upon release.
