Fire(proof) Sales: The Room games surpass 11.5M copies sold

British studio Fireproof Games, reports today (via infographic) that it's sold over 11.5 million copies of its three The Room puzzle games since launching the first in December of 2012.

Puzzle room games are big right now, and few developers know that better than British studio Fireproof Games, which reports today (via infographic) that it's sold over 11.5 million copies of its three The Room puzzle games since launching the first in December of 2012.

That's a notable number in and of itself, and especially interesting when you recall that by January of 2013, The Room had blown bast its creators' expectations (they'd cautiously hoped to break even) to surpass 1 million sales.

The game earned a slew of awards to boot, and all that success led us to ask: could The Room's success predict a new trend in games being designed around very small, hyper-detailed spaces?

Now, years later, it seems like maybe it did -- just not in the way many expected. While Fireproof still seems to be the dominant player in the "puzzle room" genre of video games, real-life "escape the room" games have grown incredibly popular over the last few years.

And Fireproof's own games seem to have grown steadily more popular, too -- according to the aforementioned infographic, first-day sales and best-day sales for each of the three The Room have climbed steadily (discounting the spike in best-day sales the original Room game saw when it was offered gratis as part of a promotion.)
