Employee estimates 'about a third' of Valve now working on VR/AR

While Valve's work on VR/AR may have started off small, it's now grown to encompass a significant part of the company's efforts, according to a post on Reddit today from Valve employee Alan Yates.

While Valve's work on virtual- and augmented-reality technology may have started off small, it's now grown to encompass a significant part of the company's efforts, according to a post on Reddit today from Valve employee Alan Yates.

While Yates was only offering his own estimation as an aside in the course of a broader discussion on his company's efforts to track an OSVR dev headset via Valve's Lighthouse tracking system, it's still an interesting glimpse into exactly how much Valve is focusing on VR right now.

"I was super fortunate to start at Valve right around the time Michael Abrash had begun the AR/VR research team. It was a much smaller team then than it is now," wrote Yates. "It has since grown to encompass about a third of the company, but the key individuals that solved most of the really hard technological problems and facilitated this generation of consumer headsets are still here working on the next generation."

Abrash, of course, is not -- he left Valve in 2014 to take a prominent role at Oculus VR.
