Disney breaks pace, won't be releasing a new Disney Infinity this year

Since its debut, Disney has released a new version of its "toys to life" Disney Infinity game every year -- until now, as the company plans to stick with last year's Disney Infinity 3.0 through 2016.

Since its debut in 2013, Disney has released a new version of its "toys to life" Disney Infinity game every year -- until now. According to Polygon, last year's Disney Infinity 3.0 will remain on shelves through the rest of this year.

This is notable because, as Polygon points out, Disney's latest earnings report describes a "decrease from Disney Infinity...due to higher inventory reserves and lower unit sales volume" over last year's holiday season.

Last year, of course, the "toys to life" market became remarkably crowded as LEGO launched its own entryLEGO Dimensions, which now competes with Activision's Skylanders: Supercharged and Disney Infinity 3.0 for shelf space at retail. Dimensions, incidentally, has been successful enough to drive a big jump in LEGO's fortunes.

Disney Infinity frontman John Vignocchi told Polygon that Disney's latest financials "did not have an influence on whether to put out [Disney Infinity 4.0] this year," and noted that the company's decision to stick with the extant Infinity platform (which is slated to see multiple significant content updates in 2016) for another year ensures it "will be the largest Disney Infinity release to date."
