Although it was previously thought that the next installment in the
Battlefield series would utilize DICE's Frostbite 2 engine, the company has revealed that a new version of the engine will debut later this year.
Frostbite is fast-becoming the standard engine for most of Electronic Arts' new titles -- for example,
BioWare has chosen the engine for its next
Mass Effect release.
Now EA's DICE studio has unveiled both the Frostbite 3 engine, and the first game that will implement it.
Battlefield 4 is set for release this fall, and the engine will allow for larger environments and added destruction of surroundings.
A 17-minute long video reveal has been released, as seen above. EA has already opened up pre-orders for the upcoming game via its Origin digital distribution service.
