Capcom has canceled its community-driven Nintendo 3DS game Mega Man Legends 3, noting that the current development state did not meet "the required criteria", and asking fans to "accept our sincere apology."

Capcom has canceled its community-driven Nintendo 3DS game Mega Man Legends 3, noting that the current development state did not meet "the required criteria." First announced in September last year, the game was set to be "the first Capcom game to be co-developed by the fans," as the development team was taking input from users through discussions on the Capcom site. However, a spokesperson on the Capcom-Unity site said today that both the game and the proposed prototype have been canceled outright. "From the outset the MML3 Project was intended to give gamers across the world insight and input into the development process, said GregaMan. "Part of this process includes an assessment of whether the title will go into full production, and is based on a number of criteria with input from different sectors of the company." He continued, "Unfortunately it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria, and it is with regret that we must announce that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project has been cancelled, meaning that Capcom will not be releasing the Prototype or the full game." The company said that it hoped its fans would "accept our sincere apology," and noted that those people whose ideas were set to be used in the game will be receiving commemorative gifts. Capcom was careful to stress that the cancellation had nothing to do with the departure of Mega Man creator and Capcom veteran Keiji Inafune late last year. Another key Mega Man title, Mega Man Universe, was canceled earlier this year. GregaMan noted that, despite dropping these two games, "Mega Man is still an important franchise within Capcom’s portfolio and we will continue to pursue opportunities to create new titles in the series."
