Capcom's ultra-popular-in-Japan RPG series Monster Hunter will see a social game spin-off on the Gree mobile platform, according to a report from Andriasang. Monster Hunter Exploration Journal: Phantom Island, as the new game is called, will focus on exploration, monster raising and battling with characters drawn from Monster Hunter Frontier Online. Gree is currently accepting pre-registration for the free-to-play, microtransaction-supported title, which will be launched on a variety of mobile phones later this year. The Monster Hunter series has shipped over 17 million units since premiering on the PS2 in 2004. Those shipments have gone primarily to Japan, where last December's launch of Monster Hunter Freedom 3 on the PSP drew 4 million shipments in its first month. That title has yet to be announced for a release in Western markets, where the franchises has seen much less sales success. An HD, PlayStation 3 port of Freedom 3 recently topped Japanese sales charts with over 250,000 first week sales in the country.
