Best Of Indie Games: Manipulating Gravity

[Every week, The Weblog co-editor-in-chief Tim W. will be summing up some of the top free-to-download and commercial indie games from the last seven days on his sister 'state of indie' weblog.] This week on 'Best Of Indie Games', we take a look at some of the top independent PC Flash/downloadable titles released over this last week. The delights in this edition include a finalist in both the IndieCade and Dream.Build.Play contest, a browser-based puzzler that bears similarities to Jonathan Blow's Braid, a punishing 2D platformer, plus an iOS title that's described as "Angry Birds meets cephalopods". Here's some recent highlights from the site: Game Pick: 'SONAR' (Nerdy Bird, commercial indie) "Forgoing stylish visuals for a focus on sound design, SONAR will have players investigating the underbelly of the earth. Armed with nothing but a sonar scanner, your friends dead and buried, you'll have to figure out a way to escape from the subterranean depths." Game Pick: 'The Bridge' (Physmo, commercial indie) "The Bridge is an 2D puzzle game that was recently selected as a finalist for both the IndieCade and Dream.Build.Play contest. Similar to Broken Rules' And Yet It Moves, players can manipulate gravity inside a level by shifting the layout and orientation in any direction." Game Pick: 'Eryi's Action' (Xtal Sword, freeware) "Similar to King's Owata: The Life Ending Adventure, Eryi's Action is a 2D platformer that attempts to punish players at every possible opportunity. Traps can appear out of nowhere, and enemies have a tendency to surprise you even when they all look alike." Game Pick: 'One and One Story' (MaTX and Gabriele Bonis, browser) "One and One Story has a fair bit in common with indie classic Braid. There's the game mechanics that change every now and again and force you to go back through previous levels with a totally different light on what you're doing." Game Pick: 'Squids' (The Game Bakers, commercial indie) "Squids feels like Crush the Castle except with a generous heaping of RPG elements and a tangible plotline. It's Angry Birds but with more sense and firearms-wielding cephalopods."
