The Witness has grossed over $5 million, selling 100k+ in a week

Jonathan Blow has revealed the sales data for his long-awaited new game, and as far as launch goes, it's looking good.

During its first week on sale, Jonathan Blow's long-awaited follow-up to Braid, The Witness, has sold "substantially more" than 100,000 copies and earned gross revenues of over $5 million.

This information comes from a blog post penned by Blow himself. As of this writing, traffic to his site has made it unreadable, but a copy of the blog post was saved to Imgur

Blow had already that the game made more in its first week on sale than Braid earned in its first year; notably, however, The Witness costs $40 -- much more than Braid did at $15, which Blow acknowledges.

There have been other changes since Braid, however: Market trends have also shifted significantly since 2008, and anticipation for this game was very high.

Blow says that Steam Spy's estimate for The Witness' sales is "a bit low"; as of this writing, the site pegs its sales (via user ownership data) somewhere between 45,206 and 55,052 units. Blow also says that the game is doing well on both PlayStation 4 and PC. "Neither of these platforms dominates our sales," Blow writes.

The game, notably, has not broken even yet, Blow also writes -- once fees to platforms and taxes are subtracted from gross revenues. He is, however, optimistic about earning that money back and funding his next game from sales of The Witness. We can hope he is so candid about sales data in the future.
