Smash Bros. sells 705k in two days, boosts U.S. 3DS sales

The latest in the popular fighting franchise is off to a strong start in the U.S., as it sells through hundreds of thousands of copies out of the gate.
Nintendo today announced that Super Smash Bros. for 3DS sold 705,000 copies across retail and digital in the U.S. in its first two days on sale. More than 135,000 of those copies were sold digitally. The game also helped Nintendo shift over 140,000 units of 3DS hardware for September, according to NPD Group data, a 55 percent increase over August's sales. This comes after news that the game sold over 1 million copies in its first weekend on sale in Japan. The company's collaboration with Koei Tecmo, Hyrule Warriors for the Wii U, was a more measured success, shifting 190,000 copies in about a week. It was the 11th best-selling game of the month, NPD analyst Liam Callahan said. The Wii U version of Smash Bros. will launch on November 21 in the U.S., alongside the company's new Amiibo toys, which will be compatible with that game (and others.) Want to know what makes Smash Bros. so popular? Gamasutra editor Christian Nutt spoke to a pair of experienced fighting game developers, Seth Killian and Jonathan Kim, about the game on the Talking Devs podcast.
