Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City a bright spot for Capcom's 'sluggish' year

While Capcom's Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City released to poor critical reception in March, the game has performed well on the market, selling more than 1.7 million units across the United States and Europe. Capcom reported these figures as part of its recent financial earnings report for its 2012 fiscal year, and noted that Operation Raccoon City is now the publisher's 25th best-selling title of all time. In addition, the game recently sold more than a quarter of a million units in Japan after the close of Capcom's recent fiscal year, meaning that its sales to date have now surpassed 2 million units. In its financial earnings report, Capcom noted that its 3DS release Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) G has also performed well, and has sold 1.6 million units in Japan since its release in December. While Capcom's latest Resident Evil and Monster Hunter titles have performed strongly, the company said that its newest fighting game, Street Fighter X Tekken, performed below expectations with 1.4 Million units sold worldwide. Capcom categorized its most recent year as "sluggish." During the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012, it saw revenues of 82 billion yen ($1.02 billion), down 16 percent year over year. Profits, meanwhile, hit 6.72 billion yen ($84.2 million), down 13 percent compared to the previous year. Despite the slow sales for its 2012 fiscal year, Capcom remains optimistic about the year ahead, as it expects major releases like Resident Evil 6 to provide a sizeable boost to its overall performance. For the year ended March 31, 2013, Capcom expects to see revenues increase 27.9 percent to 105 billion yen ($1.31 billion), and profits to rise 45.7 percent to 9.8 billion yen ($122.6 million).
