With paid sales of Minecraft's beta version approaching 2.2 million, developer Mojang says its considering hosting a MinecraftCon event in Las Vegas to celebrate the game's full launch this November. As currently envisioned, the conference would include both in-game and real world contests, Q&A sessions and parties leading up to a potential live-on-stage full version launch on November 11. Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson says in a blog post that attendance at the potential event could run "about $90 per person," not including travel and accommodations. As of this writing, a web poll accompanying the post shows over 7,500 people saying they would "absolutely" attend a conference as described, with nearly 11,000 saying they'd at least consider attending. Over 14,000 voters said they would not attend such a conference. Only 100 or so people attended id Software's first free QuakeCon LAN gaming event in 1996, held in a Best Western hotel in Garland, Texas. Last year's QuakeCon brought 8,500 players and major sponsors like Intel to Dallas' Hilton Anatole hotel. Roughly 8,000 people paid $100 to attend Blizzard's first Anaheim BlizzCon fan event in 2005. The company is charging $175 for tickets to this year's show, which is expected to best last year's estimated attendance mark of 28,000. Minecraft has already brought in tens of millions in revenue for Mojang, which is currently also working on a digital card/board game entitled Scrolls.
