Limbo developer Playdead Studios has revealed that it will be developing its next title using the Unity platform, noting that the decision was in aid of cutting down on the amount of work needed. Talking to games site Edge Online, Playdead game director Arnt Jensen explained that, while using a proprietary engine during Limbo development, the team found that it simply did not work well with what they were trying to achieve. "It was just too much work," he said. "It's like having a double product, doing both engine and game. And our next project is a little more ambitious than Limbo so there are a lot of things we don't want to make from the beginning." Playdead CEO Dino Patti explained further, "Limbo's engine only works when it's black and white now. It can't render color anymore." Discussing the new, as-of-yet unannounced title, Patti said, "A good game takes time. I think the new production will take at least three and a half years." Limbo released last year to critical praise from the press and gamers alike, with reviews calling it "dark, disturbing, yet eerily beautiful." The game went on to receive multiple nominations at the 11th Annual Choice Awards.
