Organizers of the annual CMJ Music Marathon announced that this year's festival will mark the debut of CMJ Play, a day-long summit event highlighting music's role in interactive entertainment. CMJ Play, hosted in association with the NYU Music Video Game Research Project at NYU Steinhardt's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, will feature a number of panels and discussions hosted by key figures in the gaming and music industries. "Bringing together leading entertainment business people and creatives, CMJ Play will focus on today's frontier of the music business; the nexus of music and interactive gaming," said CMJ Executive Producer Joanne Abbot Green. "With over 1200 bands performing in New York City across 5 days from October 19 - October 23, CMJ provides the perfect environment for music supervisors, independent artists, gaming and music publishers, technology companies and labels to interact and form new relationships. We see CMJ Play as just the start of a new and exciting chapter in the life of CMJ Marathon, one which will continue CMJ's tradition of innovation in the global music industry." Samuel Howard-Spink, Clinical Assistant Professor of the Music Business Program at NYU says, "As participatory media overtakes passive consumption as the norm, the combination of music and gaming has the potential to provide more revenues to more creators and artists over the next decade than the recorded music business alone. This is the real future of music business, and CMJ Play is where this future will be discussed, debated, and forged." CMJ Play will be held during the CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at New York University's Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for University Life, in the Richard L. Rosenthal Pavilion. Event registration is available at http://www.cmj.com/marathon.
