Retro Game of the Day! Boxxle

Retro Game of the Day is a daily look back at some of the games we loved - and some that we didn't - during the formative years. Today's entry is Boxxle.

Boxxle by FCI, released for the oldschool GameBoy B/W in late 1989 (JPN) and early 1990 (USA).

Ah, yes. Good old Boxxle. We used to make fun of this game when it was announced, for several reasons; the super-simplistic presentation, the name. The image on the cover of the dumb guy being so excited to move.. boxes!

Jokes notwithstanding, Boxxle was actually a great game to release early into the GameBoy's lifespan. It didn't have to compete on looks with much, and since it was a thinking-man's puzzle game, you could pick it up ad play it at your own pace. The gameplay was extremely simple, push each box onto a dot, in as few moves as possible.. but it was not bad for what it was, and games like this were really a nice complement to the bigger popular portable games at the time such as Tetris.

Even with it's low-level looks, the gameplay is easy to get into and well designed. It's hard to get excited about a game that looks and sounds like Boxxle in the modern age, but it has held up and can still suck you in for awhile if you give it a chance!
