Devs celebrate the tools they used to make their first games

What was the very first thing you used to make video games? It's a fun question Steve "Moshboy" Cook recently asked on Twitter -- and answers highlight how many devs get their start as game modders.

What was the very first thing you remember using to make video games?

It's a fun question, one game curator Steve "Moshboy" Cook recently asked on Twitter as part of a barrage of open questions to devs about how they got their start.

All of Cook's inquiries are interesting and worth reading (or answering, if you're a dev), but what's really notable about the opening question regarding devs' first tools is that so many people mentioned level editors or similar modding tools for established games in their responses.

That lends further credence to the notion that many game makers get their start by dipping toes into the game modding community, making it all the more laudable that modern games like Hotline Miami 2 and Doom ship with (or gain, post-release) official user-gen content creation tools.

Below, we've taken the liberty of highlighting some of the (many) great answers devs have given to Cook over the past day or so.
