This week's GameFly video game rental charts for North America, specifically relating to games rented via the games-by-mail service for the week ending July 4th, show popularity over multiple game formats.
Licensed games based on popular movies often do extremely well at both retail and rental markets, and this week is no exception, in a roundabout sort of way. Tops at the box office is the new War of the Worlds, and while there's no official game adaptation,
Destroy All Humans! is filling the role with panache as it debuts at #1 across all formats. In second place is
Conker: Live and Reloaded, making its appearance as the last first-party title for two consecutive platforms, with old reliable
God of War in third.
Destroy All Humans! and
Conker are also numbers one and two on the Xbox-only charts, with the newly Xbox-bound
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas losing a little bit of territory at third. On the PS2 chart,
Destroy All Humans! again annihilates all comers with its mighty death rays, leaving second-place
God of War and third-place
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith to flee in terror before its mighty assault. Fifth place on the PS2 chart, incidentally, is
Psychonauts.
Proving our earlier point about licensed movie games, the first title to oust
Resident Evil 4 from its #1 perch on the GameCube charts is
Fantastic Four, the official game of the newest superhero flick to come down the pike.
RE4 has taken refuge -- careful to kick down all ladders and barricade all doors -- at #2, as
Star Fox Assault comes in third.
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is back on top in the bitter Game Boy Advance chart struggle against this week's #2,
Pokémon Emerald.
Mega Man Battle Network 5: Team Colonel at #3, meanwhile, proves the more popular of the two versions, edging out
Team Protoman at #6.
New software dominates both the Nintendo DS and PSP charts: on the DS,
Kirby: Canvas Curse continues to reign at #1, with
Meteos popping up at #2 and
Bomberman arriving at #3. The similarly just-released
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is the leader on the PSP charts, with the new
Dead to Rights: Reckoning hot on its trail at #2. New titles dealt with, #3 is launch favorite
Metal Gear Ac!d.
