Epic Games and UI middleware company Scaleform have entered into a major technology partnership that'll see Scaleform's GFx tech bundled free of charge with all current and future Unreal Engine 3 releases. Epic is using Scaleform's tech to design user interfaces for its own games, like Gears of War 3, the company adds. Although Unreal Engine has always integrated Scaleform GFx, this is the first time the two will be sold as a package deal. "At Epic, we pride ourselves on delivering best-of-breed graphics, performance, and an unrivaled toolset with our Unreal Engine," says Epic CEO and UE chief architect Tim Sweeney, who calls the tech a "must-have" for Unreal licensees. The GFx middleware is used to design UI features, HUDs and animated textures. Scaleform's latest version, 3.2, recently added support for stereoscopic 3D interfaces. Scaleform president Brendan Iribe commented: "Epic is an innovator in game design and 3D engine middleware technology. Their long-term confidence in Scaleform GFx is a strong endorsement of our proven track record, increasing ubiquity, and overall leadership in the game market."
