Following the successful completion of the RSX graphical processing unit for Sony's PlayStation 3, graphics chip manufacturer Nvidia has been contracted to design a new project for the consumer electronics giant. The new project is more lucrative than even the PS3 job, which netted Nvidia $30 million over the course of its development. The new contract will make Nvidia "probably slightly more" than the RSX unit and will take until 2007 to complete, according to Nvidia chief financial officer Marv Burkett. "We had anticipated that [contract revenue] would drop off, but that's not going to happen," said Burkett. "We have new contracts with Sony to do some further designs. Burkett declined to reveal the nature of the project, saying "We have a contract to do engineering work for them. I don't think I should discuss what that product is." Given that the PS3 work has just been completed, and the PlayStation Portable graphics processor is unlikely to change during its lifetime, it's possible that the new contract has something to do with Sony's Vaio line of personal computers, but nothing has been confirmed.
