Japanese Charts: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Tops Charts

Nintendo’s new Pokemon dungeon-crawling title for DS sees a strong debut, as the Japanese game charts have a relatively slow week, and The Godfather II sneaks into the top 30 -- countdown within.

The Japanese weekly sales charts continue to be relatively slow this week, with only Nintendo’s new Pokemon title making a major splash. What will be known in the West as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky is a spin-off from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Explorers of Darkness and not a full sequel. Despite this the Nintendo DS title still recorded healthy first week sales of 142,000 units. Sales in the rest of the chart were far less vigorous, with second placed Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes selling only 28,000 units. This week also saw two titles in the top 10 sell under 10,000 units, a figure never previously seen in recent years. The second highest new entry of the week, at number five, was anime tie-in Katekyoo Hitman Reborn! DS Fate of Heat II - Unmei no Futari from Takara Tomy. The eighth tie-in to the Hitman Reborn! series on the DS, the new game sold only 18,000 units. At number six, new entry Fantasy Golf PangYa Portable for PSP sold just 13,000 units. The new portable golf sim is a spin-off from South Korean developer Ntreev Soft’s popular online series, whose Wii iterations are known as Super Swing Golf in North America. The final new entry in the top 10, at number 10, is Hudson’s Deca Sporta 2 (aka Deca Sports 2/Sports Island 2). Although the original game debuted with 65,000 units at the same time last year, and went on to ship over 1 million units worldwide, the sequel sold just 9,000 units in its first week. The only other new entry in the top 30 this week is EA’s The Godfather II. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number 17 and the Xbox 360 version at number 28.
