THQ has announced
Saints Row 2 for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in 2008. The cross-platform announcement
affirms THQ's statement earlier this year that a
planned conversion of the first
Saints Row game to the PlayStation 3 at the beginning of this year would be canceled in favor of a dual release for the sequel.
Saints Row 2 is set years after the original, as the player is now tasked with getting revenge for the events in the first game. The
Grand Theft Auto-inspired gangster sandbox title will feature customizable player gender, age, voice, crib and gangs, with expansions on the city of Stilwater and new vehicles.
Developed by THQ's internal studio, Volition,
Saints Row 2 will be playable online in 2-player co-op through the entire single-player campaign, or in a new open-world competitive multiplayer mode, suggesting that THQ's apparent problems with late delivery of PS3 multiplayer SDKs may be behind them.
“
Saints Row 2 has a much darker and more sinister story that leads your character down a path of betrayal, revenge and redemption against the city that has left him for dead, although we’ve blended that with the same light-hearted humor from the original,” said Greg Donovan, lead producer, Volition, Inc. “Couple that with the most robust open-world feature set ever developed in the genre, and
Saints Row 2 promises a gaming experience that will offer players the perfect balance of gripping narrative and compelling gameplay options.”
