Microsoft's mixed reality headsets will work with Steam

Anyone picking up a Windows Mixed Reality headset is a potential new player for developers that have a project up on Steam’s robust catalog of virtual reality games and experiences.

Windows published a breakdown of what the world can expect from its upcoming line of hybrid mixed and virtual reality headsets. While the post itself runs through a smattering of interesting technical details, what many game developers will find particularly notable is that the headsets will be compatible with Steam.

This means that anyone picking up a Windows Mixed Reality headset is a potential new player for developers that have a project up on Steam’s robust catalog of virtual reality games and experiences.

"The introduction of Windows Mixed Reality headsets is a big step forward for VR. Working with Microsoft to include Steam VR compatibility with these devices is also a big step in growing VR as an open platform for developers and consumers,” reads a statement from Valve’s Joe Ludwig.

Microsoft’s line of headsets is being manufactured by a variety of hardware partners ranging from Acer to Lenovo and start at $399 for a headset and motion controller bundle.

In its blog post, Microsoft reaffirms that the goal for its mixed reality gear is to make virtual reality both affordable and easier to use. More information on those efforts can be found on Microsoft’s Windows blog
