Japanese Charts: Robot Wars Z Does Super Business

The PS2 has proven itself to be far from dead in the latest Japanese charts, with Super Robot Wars Z dominating sales this week. A number of other new titles have also debuted, including a poor start for the Wii’s Disaster: Day of Crisis.
The PlayStation 2 has proven itself to be alive and well in the latest Japanese charts, with new entry Super Robot Wars Z selling an impressive 366,000 units in its first week on sale. The new title is the start of a new sub-series for the best-selling crossover franchise, the first to be published by Namco Bandai since its buyout of Banpresto. It follows the same basic template as previous strategy role-playing titles in the series, with characters from a range of disparate robot-themed anime, including Mobile Suit Gundam and Mazinger Z. The second-highest new entry of the week is new Nintendo DS role-playing game World Destruction from Sega. Developed by Luminous Arc creators imageepoch, the game sold 56,000 units to reach number four in the charts. The second major new PlayStation 2 debut of the week is Namco Bandai’s anime tie-in Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix Max 2 Tokumori, with the wrestling game selling 35,000 units at number five. New entry X Edge, at number seven, is also a strategy role-playing game featuring crossovers from previously unconnected series. In this case, the new PlayStation 3 title combines characters from Capcom’s Darkstalkers, Nippon Ichi’s Disgaea, Gust’s Ar Tonelico and Mana Khemia 2 (the PSP port of which is also new this week at number 12), and Idea Factory’s Spectral Souls. The game sold 22,000 units. Also new at number nine, with 18,000 unit sales is PlayStation 3 marine simulator Aquanaut’s Holiday, a follow-up to the previous two PSone titles. The final new entry of the week is Monolith Soft’s long delayed Disaster: Day of Crisis for Wii. Debuting at number ten with just 14,000 unit sales though publisher Nintendo are unlikely to find the irony of the game’s name amusing.
