Spry Fox sad to see Realm of the Mad God move on

Spry Fox had no choice but to sell its stake in indie MMO Realm of the Mad God, after co-creator Wild Shadow Studios was acquired by social games giant Kabam. But the experience was worth it, says Spry Fox's David Edery.
It emerged earlier this week that Wild Shadow Studios, the studio behind popular indie MMO Realm of the Mad God, had been acquired by social games giant Kabam, and taken the game along with it. No word was given, however, on how this buyout affected co-creator Spry Fox. David Edery, co-founder at the Triple Town studio, tells Gamasutra that he would have preferred to continue work on the title, but that the decision was essentially out of his hands. "It was Wild Shadow's decision to sell the game," he explains. "We were enjoying working on it and would have been happy to continue working on it." "But sometimes even the best projects need to end and we totally understand Alex [Carobus, founder of Wild Shadow]'s desire to take a break after a very long, very intense time working on RotMG." He adds, "We had great fun and learned a ton and wouldn't trade that experience for anything." Spry Fox agreed to sell its stake in the title to Kabam as part of the acquisition. Edery notes that he and his business partner Daniel Cook are "never satisfied with our games; we always want to keep evolving them," hence the slight disappointment over the move. "We want to build games that grow steadily; that people play for a decade or longer. The only reliable way to accomplish that is to never stop the design process," he says. "We'd like to think we helped make RotMG a better game, but the bottom line is that it was a team effort, and it's the full team that made it the special thing it is today."
