Making Kingdom Caligula For Under $1000

The process of making my most successful game.

Kingdom Caligula is my most successful game. Over funded on Kickstarter.com, reviewed on Cliqist.com, and made for under $1000. After hearing about AAA games being made for millions of dollars and the high risk of game companies going under if a single game fails I decided to write this.

The idea of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising these over bloated games is just pathetic. Bigger is not always better and these failures by big game companies is part of the reason the indie scene has exploded as much as it has.

When I first started making the "Kingdom Caligula" the last thing on my mind was to make a "safe" game. I wanted to make a great game where I could still honor the memory of the Emperor Caligula. I hired a character artist, 3 voice artists, bought music for the game and did much of the custom roman art myself, ALL for under $1000.

It took me about 2 years to complete this game, I could have had it done in less time with some/any kind of support. When the game was completed I looked at it and realized that nothing like it has ever been made, which made me feel bad about the game industry.

At the end of the day who do I have to thank for this game being made besides my own hard work? The backers on Kickstarter.com are the people responsible for this game being possible, not some big game company.

Now who is profiting from the sales of "Kingdom Caligula"? I am, just me. I find it strange that the big game companies are living in more of a fantasy world then the ones I make in my games.
