Gog.com has long billed itself as a digital distribution platform for DRM-free PC games, and now it's expanding that remit to encompass DRM-free movies as well.
The company launched its
movie catalog today with 21 DRM-free films, and expects to expand it on a weekly basis.
Most of the films are offered as high-definition .MP4 files that can be downloaded or streamed directly from Gog.com, and while the launch lineup is dominated by movies about game developers and game culture, the folks running Gog.com are pursuing distribution deals with mainstream TV and film companies.
Gog.com's expansion into the film business is significant for the company, though not unprecedented-- indie publisher Devolver Digital launched its
Films division in 2013, and the Humble Bundle went on to sell some of those movies as part of its inaugural
film bundle back in March.
