PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has made history for the second time in a month by becoming the first Steam game to pass 2 million concurrent users. 

The last-man-standing shooter hit the milestone earlier today when exactly 2,016,498 players logged in to battle it out.

It's worth remembering that less than four weeks ago the shooter was making headlines for beating Dota 2's previous all-time concurrent user record of 1,295,114. 

The fact Battlegrounds has attracted another 700,000 users since then is a testament to the game's unwavering popularity, and as the chart below shows, there's now a huge gulf between Battlegrounds and Dota 2 in terms of players. 

Given the game's extraordinary success, it's not surprising to see other studios trying to cash in on the last-man-standing craze. 

Earlier this month, Fortnite developer Epic Games revealed it'd be bringing it's very own battle royale mode to the free-to-play shooter. 

It was a smart move, and the new mode -- suitably dubbed Fortnite: Battle Royale -- attracted 7 million players during its first week.

That success came at a price, however, and after announcing Fortnite: Battle Royale the studio was heavily criticized by Battlegrounds developer Bluehole

The South Korean outfit, which created the game alongside Brendan 'PlayerUnknown' Greene, attacked Epic for "replicating the experience for which Battlegrounds is known," and suggested it may even take "further action."
