A new report from the Surgeon General’s Office is placing part of the blame for youth violence on the media.
Though the report does not include any new research, “Youth Violence: A Report of the Surgeon General” does conclude that there is significant evidence that exposure to violence in media contributes to aggressive behavior in children in the short term. “Research to date justifies sustained efforts to curb the adverse effects of media violence on youths,” concludes the report while acknowledging the difficulty of distinguishing between “the relatively small long-term effects of exposure to media violence and those of other influences.” “Youth Violence: A Report of the Surgeon General” is available now in print, an online version will be posted at a later date.
