Sony Computer Entertainment's open-world action game Infamous has sold more than 1.2 million units as of October 2009, SCEA announced this week via the official PlayStation blog. Infamous is developed by Sucker Punch Productions, which is also known for the respected PlayStation 2 platforming series, Sly Cooper. The game launched in May in North America and Europe this year, and now Sony says it will reduce the price of Infamous to $39.99. It will also launch free new DLC for the game in the form of Cole’s ‘Gigawatt Blades’ Super Power on December 10th. Sony apparently believes that Infamous holds enough weight to be expanded as a franchise. Reports surfaced in July stating that Sony Pictures is working out a movie rights deal for the game. Rumors also surfaced on the web regarding voice casting for a sequel to the PlayStation 3 title. In a post-mortem in Gamasutra sister publication Game Developer magazine this year, Sucker Punch co-founder Chris Zimmerman also said it was difficult jumping from the cartoony mascot-based Sly Cooper to a grittier, more realistic setting in Infamous. "We wildly underestimated how difficult the transition would be from the bright and cheerful PlayStation 2 graphics of the Sly Cooper games to the gritty and realistic PlayStation 3 look of Infamous," Zimmerman said. "In effect, we tried to take two steps at once. First, we needed to catch up with the realism in the best-looking PlayStation 2 games; second, we needed to match the even higher quality bar being set by the best teams as they moved to the next generation of hardware."
