Sony Announces Killzone 3, Featuring 3D Mode

Sony has confirmed it will release a third entry in Guerrilla Games' Killzone series, including a stereoscopic 3D rendering option -- but the publisher declined to give a projected release timeframe. Killzone 3 is in development for PlayStation 3 by Netherlands-based Sony-owned studio Guerrilla Games, which has developed only Killzone titles since 2004. Killzone 2 was released last year to strong critical reception and relatively strong commercial performance, selling at least one million units but falling off the NPD sales charts not long after it hit shelves. According to rumors that circulated late last year, Killzone 3 was scheduled for a 2010 ship date, but today's announcement made no mention of release plans. Sony is likely to reveal more about the game during next month's E3 Expo in Los Angeles. An official press release promises "more vehicles, explosive high powered weapons and a vicious close-combat system" to portray a conflict that "is David vs. Goliath...if Goliath had thousands of troops and a thermonuclear arsenal." Sony also claims Killzone 3 includes "levels ten times bigger than in Killzone 2," across "a host of environments that threaten to bury you on the deadly planet," such as "toxic nuclear wastelands," "a lethal alien jungle," "bitter arctic conditions," and "space." And, hoping to capitalize on increasing interest in 3D media, the game will have an optional stereoscopic 3D mode that will encourage players to "learn to fear what’s around every single corner."
