Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai says the company will now be investing renewed attention in sales of PlayStation 3 software, expecting to achieve worldwide console sales of 11 million by the end of the current fiscal year. According to the Associated Press, Hirai told the Yoimuri Shimbun newspaper that the PlayStation 3 is "starting afresh as a console to play games with," adding "Although pricing strategy is important, now we would like to put our strength in the number of software games." Recent results from U.S. software and hardware sales tracker NPD showed that the PlayStation three made the largest month-to-month sales jump of all consoles in November. The PS3 also recently outsold the Wii in Japan for the first time. Hirai also told the newspaper that his goal as CEO was to help Sony's game division "escape as soon as possible from the red and return to the black in fiscal year 2008."
