"I would love to see the old Goonswarm come back," Joe says. "The 2007, 2008 version of them. Back then, they were obnoxious and uncouth, but they weren’t malicious. They were funny. They were goofy. But they were also kind of scary, because they had astronomical amounts of people. ... I want them to go back to their roots, go back to where they were."

- World War Bee bankroller, EVE Online user Lenny Kravitz2

There's a massive war (World War Bee) taking place in popular MMO EVE Online, and it was brainstormed and bankrolled by one individual, Polygon reports.

The website spoke to the user, who goes by the name Lenny Kravitz2 in-game; Kravitz2 used his own personal funds, garnered from an in-game gambling system sanctioned by developer CCP, to start the war. The quote above reveals that apparently his actions were based, in part, on nostalgia for days gone by -- he's referring to the in-game faction that is the target of aggression in the war, above. He hired the mercenary forces to launch the conflict against them, and is spending massive amounts of in-game currency, daily, to fund the war effort.

It's a fascinating look at the way a game whose player-base keeps it vibrant and dynamic can shift and change simply due to the actions of dedicated players.
