Best Of Indie Games: Get a GIRP Without Turning to Wave

IndieGames.com co-editor Tim W. looks at some of the top indie titles released over the past week, including a fast-paced variation of chess with no turns and a new release from QWOP designer Ben Foddy
[Every week, IndieGames.com: The Weblog co-editor Tim W. will be summing up some of the top free-to-download and commercial indie games from the last seven days on his sister 'state of indie' weblog.] This week on 'Best Of Indie Games', we take a look at some of the top independent PC Flash/downloadable titles released over this last week. The goodies in this edition include a new release from QWOP designer Ben Foddy, a 2D platformer about the relationship between the Sun and the Sea, a fast-paced variation of chess with no turns, plus a two-player acting simulation that plays like a 3D version of Jason Rohrer's Sleep is Death. Here's the highlights from the last seven days: Game Pick: 'GIRP' (Ben Foddy, browser) "From the twisted mind that brought us QWOP comes GIRP, yet another game that is near impossible to play. GIRP demands you press your keyboard letters to grab rings and pull your guy up. Fingers everywhere, which ring to pick, brain hurting, meltdown - this is roughly the order in which your first few games will take." Game Pick: 'Beneath the Waves' (Gregory Weir, browser) "Beneath the Waves tells the story of the relationship between the Sun and the Sea. The Sun gives the Sea eight great idols as a gift, but after the two grow apart, the Sea decides to convert the idols into evil demon beasts." Game Pick: 'Chess Without Turns' (Mikolaj Kaminski, browser) "Chess Without Turns is a variation of the popular board game that does away with turns and conventional chess rules, leaving only an action-packed arcade simulation that usually favors the quickest player in a random match-up. You move your chess piece at the same time as your opponent, and every pawn that reaches the other end of the board will receive an automatic promotion." Game Pick: 'Picma Squared' (Moonberry Studios, browser) "Picma Squared is a set of grid-based puzzles that play out like a cross between Minesweeper and Picross. Numbers of each gird show how many colours squared are in that area, and your job is to fill the grid appropriately." Game Pick: 'Improviso' (Dramatics, freeware) "Improviso is a two-player acting simulation, where two people act out a story online. Developed by a team at GAMBIT, it plays out a little like a 3D real-time version of Jason Rohrer's Sleep is Death."
