Facebook's standalone gaming client is live, Unity support in beta

Facebook's freshly revealed Gameroom is a downloadable client that allows users to access a library of Facebook games without the need to load into the website or even open a browser.

At the Unite LA keynote earlier today, Facebook’s Leo Olebe officially unveiled Facebook Gameroom, a Steam-like gaming client first discussed back in August. As part of Facebook's ongoing partnership with Unity, Olebe also announced that version 5.6 of Unity will ship with Gameroom support.

This means that developers will be able to create games in Unity and export directly to Facebook Gameroom and WebGL. Currently, developers can give Gameroom support a try via a public beta on Facebook.

Full instructions, as well as required features for launching on the Gameroom platform, can be found on Facebook’s developer website

Gameroom acts as a dedicated place for Facebook users to access the games and apps they previously may have played from their web browser. Players are able to search for new games by category, access applications they’ve used in the past, or take a look at new content highlighted on the Gameroom storefront.

All in all, Gameroom looks like a more focused way for developers to bring their games to the attention of Facebook users and having Gameroom integrated directly into Unity potentially makes it easier for those games to reach Facebook’s massive audience.
