Video: Automating content creation so tiny teams can make big games

At GDC Europe 2015 developer Alexander Birke explains how a small team built an outsized game -- The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle -- by creating efficient automated processes to create content.

Last year developer and programmer Alexander Birke worked on the first episode of The Adventurers of Bertram Fiddle, an adventure game with tons of animation and dialogue developed by the small team at Rumpus Animation.

At GDC Europe 2015 Birke took the stage to explain how, since the game was developed with a small team, a large amount of effort and brainpower was spent on reducing the workload of creating so much content.

During his talk Birke shared the problems they faced and how they solved them, detailing the team's approach to automating repetitive tasks, designing custom workflows to help different disciplines (like say, animators and programmers) work together efficiently, and building novel systems to automatically track assets and ensure nothing goes missing.

Making games involves making a lot of mistakes, says Birke -- the trick is learning how to create a workflow that lets you find and fix them fast. Watch him explain how now, for free, over on the GDC Vault's official YouTube channel.

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its new YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.
