Team Dynamics Peer Evaluations

My first experience with face-to-face peer reviews on a Team Game Project.

Peer evaluations are the primary form of peer feedback during the Guildhall’s TGPs.  At the end of each milestone, team members anonymously rate their peers on a scale of one to five (one meaning they need to improve in this area, with a five meaning they display excellent performance in this area) in four different categories: Quality, Attitude, Work Ethic, and Attendance.  Students are also able to fill out a comments section for each teammate.

We had our first round of team evaluation sessions for TGP2 this week, and I’m quite pleased with how they turned out.  Based on the information contained in these evaluations, I administered face-to-face feedback with each member of my team.  I called each team member into a meeting room and we discussed the feedback that they received from their team members.

I discussed relevant points for improvement with each team member.  I must say, however, that the feedback for each team member was consistently awesome.  Bringing each individual into a room and sitting them down to discuss all of the great reviews they received from their team mates was a process I would love to repeat over the course of my career.

Now, I realize that things won’t always go this smoothly in a team environment.  However, I feel very fortunate to be part of a team that not only works extremely well together, but respects each other as friends.  This team evaluation process has taught me that developing these close relationships with your colleagues plays a critical role in the success of a game project.  Once you reach that level of respect for one another, there are no limits to what your team can accomplish.
