On May 11th, the French indie game studio Gamabilis will launch their new farming game Roots of Tomorrow. Based on real scientific data, the game aims to raise awareness and educate the public about the daily lives and challenges farmers face in an age of sustainable agriculture.

Up to this point, Gamabilis made educational games about diet and health. Convinced that a healthy diet heavily relies on good agriculture. Regrettably, recent advances in agriculture and sustainable farming are not well-known to the general public. But for this agroecological transition to truly succeed, it is critical for the public to understand it. That is why Gamabilis created Roots of Tomorrow.

« To better explain this agroecological transition, we decided to take a strategy game’s approach. Indeed it gives a better overview of the economic, environmental and social consequences of each farming action. »

  • Marianne Tostivint

Game Director

The game is set in France where the player can choose between three multicrop-livestock farms. Each farm has its own landscape, climate, livestock (pigs, sheep and cattle) and unique choices. The goal of the game is to achieve the agroecological transition of the farm within 10 years. To do so, the player will have to maximize and balance the farm’s economic, environmental and social scores. Each score is made up of sub-scores. For example, the environmental score will have a biodiversity subscore.

A variety of farming activities are available : buying and selling crops, plowing and harvesting, hiring employees, investing in building upgrades and new machinery… Moreover, new and innovative sustainable farming practices (plant covers, direct seeding, precision fertilizing) can be unlocked during the game. All actions affect the farm’s global scores. However, some actions may have a positive impact on one sub-score, but a negative one on another. Therefore, players will have to build a unique strategy by weighing the pros and cons of each action.

« What I really love about this game is that it gave us the opportunity to visit farms and meet farmers, experts and scientists who each had their own view on agroecology. We soon realized that there are multiple paths towards an agroecological transition. That is why we gave the player the freedom to craft different strategies in this game. »
